Novgorod Russia

Novgorod-

I had an opportunity to travel to Russia in 2018. I was surprised by the beauty of Russia. It’s so impressive.

One of the cities that impressed me is Novgorod. I will show some pictures in this post. That’s what I saw in Novgorod. I think Novgorod is an amazing city. Maybe you have been to Russia before, have you ever been to Novgorod?

This is a city with more than 1,000 years of history. Novgorod Castle is a must-visit attraction, surrounded by a beautiful river. Inside the castle, it is an amazing cathedral.

Novgorod (meaning “new town” in Russian), also known as Novgorod the Great or Veliky Novgorod. It is one of the oldest and most important historic cities in Russia.

Novgorod Kremlin

The castle was built in the center of the city. The whole building is of medieval style and is one of the oldest castles in Russia. UNESCO recognized Novgorod as a World Heritage Site in 1992.

Volkhov River

The Volkhov river connects Lake Ilmen and Lake Ladoga.

It flows out of Lake Ilmen north into Lake Ladoga, the largest lake of Europe.

Cathedral of St. Sophia, Novgorod

St. Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod is a typical Orthodox church.

The 38-metre-high, five-domed, stone cathedral was built by Vladimir of Novgorod between 1045 and 1050 to replace an oaken cathedral which was typical at that time.

The wall is white color which  is very solemn and sacred.

The whole church is composed of 5 circular vaults, one of which is golden yellow, shining under the sunlight and very gorgeous.

St. Sophia Cathedral stands by riverside. It’s so picturesque.

Can you imagine that  the city was the capital of the Novgorod Republic and was one of Europe’s largest cities at its peak during the 14th century?

Novgorod was the birthplace of ancient Russia. It was destroyed during World War II and later rebuilt.

Visitors can learn about the history of the ancient Russian thousands of years ago and see its gorgeous ancient cultural heritage.
